Hari Kondabolu is famous for a film more people have opinions about than have seen. The Indian-American comedian’s 2017 documentary The Problem With Apu touched on the mixed feelings he had growing up loving The Simpsons yet not liking its treatment of its regular Asian character. It certainly caused plenty of debate: the TV show made a rather brittle retort to it in an episode this spring. And like it or not, the film will keep defining him. He has even had death threats. “I hated being connected to Apu; because of the film I’m forever connected to Apu.”
