The Groucho Club in Soho has seen the sudden departure of its managing director in the past week, amid murmurs from some members that the place has lost its feel since the departure, in 2017, of celebrated manager Bernie Katz after 27 years. 

Who’d have thought it? People are looking back at the Groucho of three decades ago as the Golden Age of Soho. I remember that the rough and ready regulars I mixed with at the time at the Coach and Horses, or the rackety Colony Room Club (where the carpet resembled asphalt), thought the Groucho rather jumped up and gentrified – full of advertising types who betrayed the penniless purity of true bohemia.

Gentrification is still the complaint today, this time…
