The American TV version of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s hit 2014 movie is set to air both here and in the US around this time next year.
Variety magazine reports that US network FX has officially ordered a 10-episode season, which will be written by the Kiwi pair, with a planned airdate of sometime between February and April next year. A Sky TV spokeswoman confirmed that they had plans to air the show in New Zealand on the SoHo channel.
Starring Matt Berry, Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou and Harvey Guillen, the TV series relocates the action from the movie’s Wellington setting to New York City.

“What We Do in the Shadows’ only gets better with age thanks to this brilliant adaptation for television by co-creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi,” FX’s co-president of original programming Nick Grad told Variety. “Their feature version was a hilarious, fresh take on the mundanity of everyday life that even immortals must face. We are thankful to them, Paul Simms and Scott Rudin, and this amazing cast for taking us deeper into the shadows with this series.”
Clement, Waititi, and Simms are executive producers on the series, along with Rudin, Eli Bush, and Garrett Basch.
As has been previously reported, this is not the only Shadows-associated project in the works. Clement and Waititi are developing a movie sequel based around the Rhys Darby-led group of werewolves – currently titled We’re Wolves – while a six-part New Zealand-based TV series, Wellington Paranormal (focused around Shadows‘ bumbling cops Karen and Mike), is set to debut on TVNZ2 later this year.
